Small Surprises in My December Backyard

šŸ’ŒFrom My Nest to Yours

Hello Reader,

This year, December snuck in before I knew it—a soft, quiet shift that reminded me how much joy can hide in the smallest everyday moments. This past month has been full of tiny surprises in my little Florida backyard, and I’m grateful I slowed down enough to actually see them. I hope a few small moments have found you, too. 😊

🌿Nature Right Now

Our little Ruby-throated Hummingbird is still here—surprising both me and my husband, since we were so sure she’d be long gone by now. She’s even taken a special liking to our little window feeder lately, letting us admire her from just a few feet away. While many hummingbirds migrate farther south for winter, a smaller number stay in Florida year-round—and this tiny visitor seems perfectly happy doing just that.

✨Reflections of Wonder

One thing I love about watching nature closely is realizing how often the smallest creatures create the biggest changes.

My cucumbers have been growing beautifully since I started them from seed. But after last season—when the vines looked amazing yet never produced a single cucumber—I was a little hesitant to believe things would be different this time. Even when the plant was covered in flowers, only one female flower had been pollinated. A familiar little doubt crept in. šŸ˜…

Then I started seeing him—a tiny metallic green bee spending a surprising amount of time hopping from flower to flower. At first, I wasn’t sure whether he was a friendly helper or a tiny foe up to mischief. But as the days went on, cucumbers started appearing everywhere!

A little research revealed the truth: he’s one of the best pollinators you can hope for.

Between that little bee and our lingering hummingbird, this month has felt like a soft reminder that the smallest things often carry the most wonder.

šŸ‘€Behind the Binoculars

One of my favorite moments this month happened completely by accident. We had the kitchen blinds opened all the way—nothing hiding us from view—and my husband and I were standing right there behind the glass. And still, our little hummingbird friend stopped by!

She perched at the window feeder for over five minutes, sipping calmly, totally unbothered by us watching her in full view. For such a tiny bird to feel that comfortable was incredibly special. After thinking she’d surely left for the season, moments like that feel like a gift.

If you’re curious, this is the window feeder she’s become so fond of:

March 2026 šŸ’ŒFrom My Nest to Yours Hello Reader, After the freezing temperatures we had here in February, the backyard looked a little rough for a while. But over the past couple of weeks, I’ve started to see signs that everything is coming back to life again. Up until this year, I thought I really enjoyed cold weather. Those freezing nights changed my mind pretty quickly. I’m realizing I may actually be a warm weather girl at heart, and I am very happy to see the temperatures climbing again....

February 2026 šŸ’ŒFrom My Nest to Yours Hello Reader, February has felt a little surprising this year. Florida, like much of the country, has been hit with freezing temperatures that asked a lot from everything living outdoors, even as so much of it quietly adapted. Not the kind of cold we usually joke about down here, but several days of true winter that required some real-time adjusting—from all of us. 🌿Nature Right Now After multiple nights below freezing, much of my garden took a hit. A lot...

January 2026 šŸ’ŒFrom My Nest to Yours Hello Reader, January always feels like a fresh slate to me—not in a loud, start-over-from-scratch kind of way, but in a quieter, more reflective one. There’s something about this month that invites a pause. A moment to look around, take stock, and reset without erasing what was already good. Out in the yard, that feeling shows up in small ways. I’m refreshing the garden, getting winter seeds started, and enjoying the subtle shift in pace that January...
